Investigating post-concussion risks for lower extremity injuries in athletes

This research study found that concussed athletes face a significantly elevated risk of lower extremity injuries within one year of their concussion, including a 40% increased risk of ankle injuries and 36% increased risk of knee sprains. Interestingly, during the first three months post-concussion, injury rates were actually lower, but increased substantially after nine months. These findings suggest clinical and subclinical effects of concussions persist for up to a year, warranting updates to concussion management protocols.
